What opportunities do old tricks still give us?
The stool vại looks at the famous cốc bia Hà Nội as a model for contemporary, low-cost Vietnamese
manufacturing. Hanoi's beer glasses were designed in 1976 by Mr. Lê Huy Văn and are still
made today in Xối Trì using recycled
glass panes and bottles.
Vietnam, like the rest of the world, throws away vast amounts of plastic waste each day. Could a circular
system be set up where some of this plastic is melted and remoulded into stools for quán bia? Drawing on the
aesthetic but more importantly, manufacturing logic of the cốc bia, the stool vại explores a uniquely
Vietnamese version of circularity.
